WHALE RIDER
Kahu Paikea Apirana is only 12 years old, but already she wants to become chief of her Maori tribe. Unfortunately, tradition dictates that only a first-born grandson and descendant of the Whale Rider can lead, and her grandfather thinks that her wilful ways are causing dissension in the tribe. Her father has given up the right to lead, and even though Kahu is diligently learning the traditional ways, she’s ignored. That’s all about to change, however, as the whales have their say in this critically acclaimed, family friendly, New Zealand-German co-production. When: Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. Where: Metro Cinema, 8712 109 St. Admission: Free admission for children 12 years of age and under. Info: metrocinema.org
STAR PARTY
The buildup to the main attraction is considerable as Elk Island National Park hosts this Sunday’s Star Party. Look for live music throughout the day, face painting, displays, rocket launching, Blackfoot Sky Stories from Juanita Tallman and a talk from Ross Lockwood on A Universe Full of Life, among many other attractions. The real reason you’ll want to go starts after 9:30 p.m., as everyone gathers at the Park Centre parking lot for some night astronomy. When: Sunday, Sept. 4, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Where: Elk Island National Park Admission: $7.80, adults; $6.80, seniors; $3.90, youth. Info: pc.gc.ca
FASHION SHOW
There’s still time to register kids between the age of four and 12 for this year’s Multi-Cultural Children’s Fashion Show if you’re of a mind to. The North Edmonton Business Association has also added trade show vendors, children’s games and entertainment as well as Tai Chi demonstrations and a Lion Dance performance. When: Sunday, Sept. 4, noon to 4 p.m. Where: Castle Downs Park, 11520 153 Ave. Admission: Free Info: neba.ca
