Now’s not the time for Olympic bid
Given the current economic pain Calgary is going through, there must be better places to use $5 million of public money before spending it on “determining” if an Olympic bid should be made.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says that security is now the No. 1 expense at the Olympics. I would like to see any future Olympic bids include the proviso that participating countries pay their share of the total security costs, at the least, so that the home country isn’t on the hook for the whole thing.
Otherwise, whoever puts forward the bid should say “not interested” if the International Olympic Committee won’t support the idea.
We need to force change on the IOC or just stop bidding altogether. Too much to ask? Alternatively, stop moving the Olympics around every four years. Give the host city the event for at least two consecutive go-arounds to give them a chance to break even. David L. Young, Edmonton
