One person was wounded after being hit by gunshot “shrapnel” during a break and enter at a northeast Edmonton home early Monday, police said.

At about 4:45 a.m., police were called to a home where a break and enter had been reported, near 118 Avenue and 49 Street, Staff Sgt. David DeMarco said.

A firearm was discharged during the incident, and one of the people sustained “far from life-threatening injuries.”

“The firearm was discharged, is our understanding, not necessarily in the direction of somebody, but there were some injuries sustained from some of the shrapnel. But I don’t think it was a direct shot toward the person,” DeMarco said.

Detectives from the northeast division are investigating.

DeMarco couldn’t comment on whether anything was stolen during the break-in.

Police are looking for three men in connection with the incident, but said that the identities of the suspects are unknown.

Police are also still investigating an Oct. 4 home invasion near the city’s northern limits that ended with one of the suspects being shot dead.

Police believe that that house may have been wrongly targeted.

The occupants of the McConachie Boulevard home called police at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to report intruders in their home. When police arrived, they found the husband and wife in the basement. They had been tied up, blindfolded and severely beaten.

EPS said the intruders had demanded drugs and money from them. One of the intruders, Omar Terrance Albert, 23, was found shot to death in the basement of the house.
