TERRIFIC TRIO

Full House Lottery aims to amaze for a worthy cause

- LAURA SEVERS

It will likely be the shortest commute ever — from Edmonton — to reach that New York state of mind.

On the outside, the Greenwich from Perry Signature Homes does not give you a clue that New York City has been transported to southwest Edmonton. But walk inside and you’ll want to make a brand new start of it in old New York. Picture a chef’s kitchen that evokes a feeling of being in a cutting-edge Manhattan restaurant, or a lower level that transports you to an underground SoHo nightclub just steps down from the main floor.

Not a New York type? Well, the 2017 edition of the Full House Lottery has you covered, with three attention-grabbing homes available, located in ONE at Windermere. In addition to the Greenwich, the Winchester from Kondro Homes incorporates a West Coast feel and unique touches, including a music room and a kids study zone, equipped with a magnetic chalkboard wall. Or maybe Parkwood Master Builder — with its first Full House home, the Princeton — has what you’re looking for. Skip the stairs and take a slide to the bungalow’s lower level, which is also home to a scotch-tasting room designed to enhance your favourite malt or grain whisky experiences.

The first grand prize — Kondro’s Winchester — is a four-bedroom, four-bathroom, two-storey home that’s valued at a shade over $2 million, once the cost of the lot, GST, and a $25,000 cash bonus is factored in. The home features freeflowing spaces and an organic feel. A music room just off the front entrance is framed by a three-sided fireplace, which in turn opens into the two-storey great room.

“I’ve been involved in this for over 15 years,” said Brent Kondro, owner of Kondro Homes. “These hospitals are an integral part of our community and I’m passionate about putting all my energy into this wonderful cause.”

The spacious modern kitchen — the largest Kondro Homes has built to date — is designed as a natural gathering spot, with both a large island and dining bar, as well as a zone for casual television viewing. Unique touches include a Modular Arts three-dimensional cube-like feature wall in the main floor powder room, along with custom glass accents from Flux Glass Studio.

Upstairs you’ll find an openconcept theatre room and two children’s bedrooms, along with a master bedroom that has its own entryway, highlighted by a Modular Arts wall that mimics the look of crushed paper. This space includes a sitting area, an office tucked between the bedroom and the spacious spa ensuite, a large walk-in closet, and a laundry area. Downstairs, a half-court gymnasium with a 13-foot ceiling measures close to 1,000 square feet. Just off the main court is a fitness area for rope climbing or weightlifting. If you prefer a little more relaxation, a games room, lounge and wet bar are close by.

The Winchester makes up the first grand prize, but the second grand prize winner can choose between the Greenwich or the Princeton. The Greenwich from Perry, at 4,552 square feet, has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, but it’s the New York styling that catches your eye. The restaurant-inspired kitchen includes 10-foot floorto-ceiling wine racks. Industrialstyle fridges, three of them with glass doors, also vie for your attention. Brick walls in the kitchen and great room give a sense of old New York, while the main floor powder room has an upscale industrial feel to it.

To round out your New York dining experience, the basement features your own club. A graffiticovered brick wall and mannequin bouncer greet you before you gain admittance through the storefront-like glass doors. Once inside, you’re in The Roxy, your own underground SoHo club with a full bar setup, complete with a lounge and stage.

When it’s time to leave, forget about hailing one of those ubiquitous yellow cabs. Just walk up to the second floor, where the master suite and two more bedrooms await.

“Perry Homes got involved with the Full House Lottery several years ago for both personal reasons, and as a business interested in building and strengthening the Edmonton community,” said Michelle Dolan, sales and marketing manager for Perry Homes.

“Seeing the groundbreaking innovations brought to these hospitals as a result of the funds generated brings us back every year. We play but a small role in building something beautiful for the lucky winners of the lottery and in turn the patients of these hospitals.”

The other choice for the second grand prize, Parkwood’s Princeton, is a three-bedroom, five-bathroom home that comes in at 4,280 square feet. Kids are bound to hop on the slide to the lowerlevel ball pit before you have a chance to close the front door. And you might want to follow, as the finished basement houses an impressive scotch tasting room with its own bar, dishwasher, ice maker and wine fridge, so you don’t need to run upstairs to use the kitchen’s facilities, as well as an adjacent billiards room.

Staying on the lower level, there’s a sunken pop culture media room, with a Batman gaming table and other comic-related artwork from local artist Kevin Wilson. If that doesn’t hook the younger set, the downstairs bedrooms likely will. One has a recessed bed nook, while the other offers camping fans four bunk beds, highlighted by a forestlike mural.

“This is our first year doing the Full House Lottery,” said Parkwood president Dan Hanna, “but we have been involved with the University of Alberta Hospital. To date, Parkwood has donated $200,000 through other charity initiatives (to the University hospital) and this is just another way to help them.”

Upstairs, Parkwood hasn’t forgotten the adults. The open-concept floor plan includes a dining room framed by reclaimed wood beams from an Ontario farmhouse and a recessed backlit wine feature area.

The kitchen has an urban cultivator to grow herbs and two dishwashers.

The mud room contains a dog station for food and water, a dog shower, and a separated section for laundry, with a washer-dryer combo.

The great room opens into a striking indoor/outdoor entertaining space with a fireplace and built-in barbecue that can be used year-round, due to the retractable accordion glass wall that opens onto the backyard.

If you prefer a view of the front yard, Parkwood has an answer for that, with the master suite opening onto a front deck. The rest of the master suite is all about comfort and convenience. The bedroom, with its hints of spa-like relaxation, is equipped with its own wet bar and is connected to a large walk-through closet that contains another washer and dryer. Continue past the closet and a stunning ensuite greets you, containing a sunken bathtub surrounded by dark pebbles.

“The Full House Lottery, over the years, has literally touched every corner, every unit of both hospitals,” said Nicole Merrifield, director of communications and special projects for the University Hospital Foundation.

This will be the 24th edition of the Full House Lottery, and to date it has raised more than $73 million for both the University Hospital Foundation and Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. Organizers hope to raise more than $3.9 million to help fund a new PET/CT scanner for the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation and a stroke ambulance — Canada’s first — at the University Hospital.

As an added bonus, a downtown condominium at the Ultima, with Ice District views, is part of the early bird prize package.

“We always hope to sell out,” adds Sharlene Rutherford, vicepresident of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, “as both hospitals will receive almost $4 million (combined). This lottery is all about helping both hospitals to deliver the very best care.”

At the Royal Alexandra: Working at a cellular level, a PET/CT scanner detects disease at its earliest stages and determines its exact location. It dramatically improves treatment results for cancer, as well as heart disease and dementia patients.

At the University Hospital: About two million brain cells are lost each minute after a stroke. Doctors need to know what kind of stroke the person is having before they can provide life-saving care. The University Hospital’s stroke ambulance is the first in the world to take stroke care to rural communities. It’s also the first stroke ambulance in Canada.
