A RuPaul dramedy? That’s fabulous!

- MELISSA HANK

Grab your false eyelashes and your most fabulous wig — a show based on the rise of RuPaul is in the works. J.J. Abrams and RuPaul will executive-produce the half-hour dramedy, which will track RuPaul’s journey from club kid to drag queen to the sashaying, shanté-ing personality she is today.

It’ll be set in New York during the 1980s and offer a fictionalized version of RuPaul’s story. There isn’t yet a network attached to the project, reports Deadline, but insiders expect it to be shopped around soon.

Incidentally, RuPaul’s drag-queen reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race returns for its ninth season this Friday on OUTtv.

Thirteen new contestants will strap on their stilettos to compete for a cash prize of US$100,000.

The season premiere features Lady Gaga, with later episodes welcoming Lisa Kudrow, Meghan Trainor, Kesha, The B-52s, Naya Rivera, Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth.

“We had a fabulous time with Gaga,” RuPaul recently told Entertainment Weekly. “She was in heaven because this is all so much a part of her wheelhouse and what she does with imagery, costumes and the way she presents herself.”

HEARTLAND RENEWED

The CBC family drama Heartland will pump out new episodes for another season. On the show’s official Facebook page, star Amber Marshall confirms the news in a video.

“I wanted to thank you all for watching season 10 of Heartland,” she says. “And I am so excited to tell you that season 11 will be starting on CBC this fall.”

The show wraps up season 10 this Sunday with the episode Greater Expectations, in which Amy Fleming (Marshall) and Ty Borden (Graham Wardle) will welcome their first child. Meanwhile, the ghost horse returns, but Amy takes issue with Georgie’s (Alisha Newton) plan to capture and tame him.

Heartland, which films in southern Alberta and Calgary, follows a family living on a horse ranch in Alberta. It debuted in 2007 and is the longest-running drama in Canadian television history.

BASKETS’ CASE

Also getting another season is the FX series Baskets, Zach Galifianakis’s dramatic-comedy about an aspiring clown. In season 2, Chip (Galifianakis) went to jail, his twin brother Dale (also Galifianakis) got a selfie stick, Martha (Martha Kelly) tried clowning and love found Chip and Dale’s mom, Christine (Louie Anderson, who won an Emmy for his role). In the season finale titled Circus, airing tonight, Christine turns to Arby’s when Chip joins the Russians.
