Jean’s views on land outdated

-

Re. “Jean says he’d kill NDP plan to keep off-road vehicles out of parks,” March 27

Less than six per cent of Albertans are owners or recreational users of offhighway vehicles. So what makes Brian Jean think he has the licence to overturn a decision based on science that is in the best interests of the remaining 94 per cent of the population?

His view that land has no value unless it can be used for human consumption is outdated and ecologically illiterate. A more enlightened attitude is to appreciate the value of wilderness without ever having to set foot in it — indeed, to forbear to set foot in it for the very reason that it is wilderness. Our parks and protected areas are in for a rough ride if the Wildrose become the next government. P.J. Cotterill, Edmonton
