Weston cre­ated G.I. Joe fig­ure

The cre­ator of the G.I. Joe ac­tion fig­ure has died at the age of 84. Stan­ley Weston died on May 1, TheWrap.com re­ports. A cause of death was not re­ported. The New York na­tive and U.S. army vet­eran came up with the idea for a mil­i­tary doll for boys af­ter notic­ing the pop­u­lar­ity of the Bar­bie toys in the early 1960s. His cre­ation be­came known as G.I. Joe and he sold the de­sign to toy­maker Has­bro, which launched the first line of ac­tion fig­ures. The toy also in­spired a car­toon se­ries in 1985 and later a film fran­chise.
