We’re getting an extra year of NDP

-

Alberta provincial election terms were normally five years. The PCs passed the Election Amendment Act on Dec 6, 2011. This set a fouryear, fixed term with elections between March 1 and May 31 every four years.

Premier Jim Prentice jumped the gun when he became PC leader and asked for an early dissolution April 7, 2015, with the election called for May 5 that year instead of in 2016 (as scheduled).

In order to get back to the normal fixed, four-year rotation set out in the election amendment act, the current sitting government will have to add an extra year to their mandate. They’ll have to call an election somewhere between March 1 and May 31 in 2020, not in 2019 as the media keep suggesting.
