THE TOP 5

Here are the top five movies at the North American box office:

-

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: The sequel to the summer hit of 2014 continues to not take itself too seriously, which is a good thing. Chris Pratt’s Peter (StarLord) Quinn and the rest of the gang find themselves pursued over some stolen batteries, and rescued by Peter’s dad (Kurt Russell, in Zeus makeup). Groot is still great, but Dave Bautista’s Drax really shines in this one. (Chris Knight)

The Fate of the Furious: The eighth in the long-running series about car-crazy do-gooders drives off a cliff thanks to a complicated plot that moves the movie from stupid/fun to just plain stupid/ stupid. Two more sequels coming. Maybe it’ll get good again. (Chris Knight) The Boss Baby: This is a movie without a defined audience. Not enough physical humour for kids, lacks adult interest beyond a few chuckles here and there. An absurdly complicated premise is somewhat mitigated by a family story that makes it endurable — but only just. (Tina Hassannia) How to Be a Latin Lover: Eugenio Derbez stars as Maximo, a man who made his living seducing rich older women but who finds himself dumped by his much-older wife after 25 years of marriage. He’s forced to move in with his estranged sister Sara (Salma Hayek) and her son Hugo (Raphael Alejandro).

Not rated (Melissa Hank) Beauty and the Beast: Disney’s newest live-action remake adds more than 40 minutes to the running time of the 1991 original but still doesn’t feel too long. Emma Watson is the bookish beauty; Dan Stevens has been cursed/computer-generated into the Beast. Songs, romance and anthropomorphic household items; what’s not to love? (Chris Knight)
