Canada has the world’s thirdlargest oil reserves — behind only Venezuela and Saudi Arabia — with 97 per cent of those assets in the oilsands, an area comprising 142,200 square kilometres in the Athabasca, Cold Lake and Peace River regions of northern Alberta. Following are some other figures related to oilsands production in Alberta:
165.4 billion Barrels of established oilsands reserves in Alberta, according to provincial data.
2.5 million The number of barrels per day produced from Alberta’s oilsands, and forecast to grow to 3.1 million bpd by 2020 and to 3.7 million by 2030. Western Canadian oil production is expected to grow from 3.6 million bpd to 4.9 million by 2030.
133,000 Number of people employed in Alberta’s upstream energy sector, including the oilsands, as of 2014, according to Statistics Canada.
$16.6 billion Estimated capital investment in Alberta’s oilsands sector last year, following $23.4 billion in 2015. Capital investment in 2017 is forecast at $15 billion.
3,400 Number of Canadian companies with direct ties to the oilsands as of 2015, according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.
$4 trillion Expected contribution to the Canadian economy from oilsands development over the next 20 years, according to the Canadian Energy Research Institute.
