WARD PROFILES
PHIL ASHER
Phil Asher has lived in Edmonton for two decades and, according to his campaign material, was an elected town councillor in Fort Nelson, B.C., where he lived for many years. He has worked in the private sector his whole life and says perseverance is his strong suit.
BRIAN KENDRICK
Kendrick, 57, works in the construction industry as an owner-operator, with his business operations based in Edmonton. He has been involved as an officer on a board of directors for numerous companies in Edmonton and says he has been involved with environmentally-sensitive projects in both federal and provincial parks.
NAFISA BOWEN
Bowen, 34, is a development officer with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. She spent seven years with STARS Air Ambulance in various fundraising capacities before becoming a press secretary and executive assistant to the leader of the Alberta Liberal Opposition in 2014-15. Bowen has worked in the not-for-profit sector for more than 10 years.
DAWN NEWTON
Newton is senior manager of community affairs for Telus Communications. She spent six years working in public affairs in the oil and gas sector and is the board chair of the Zebra Child Protection Centre. Newton is a member of the Women’s Advocacy Voice of Edmonton and has a long list of community service to her name.
SARAH HAMILTON
Hamilton, 32, is owner-operator of a communications and public relations firm that works with non-profits. She also spent time in the legislative building in 201415 as deputy press secretary for then-health minister Stephen Mandel, who endorsed her campaign. Hamilton served on the board of Latitude 53 Contemporary Art.
SVETLANA PAVLENKO
Pavlenko is executive director of the Jewish Senior Citizens Centre for seven years. She immigrated to Canada from Novosibirsk, Siberia, 10 years ago. She is an independent candidate, and is the board secretary of the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts and was named as one of Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2015 for her work with seniors.
MIRANDA JIMMY
Jimmy, 36, is the program manager with the Edmonton Heritage Council and also comes from the notfor-profit sector. Jimmy has been on the Edmonton Public Library Board since 2013, and is serving as a member of the city council initiative on public engagement’s policy and framework working group.
JAMES PRENTICE
Prentice, 40, manages social development contracts for the Government of Alberta and has also worked in refugee and immigrant settlement services, municipal water, paving and social work, among other roles. According to his campaign website, he is also a volunteer for several community organizations, including Catholic Social Services and Hope Mission.
DAVID XIAO
Xiao is the former Progressive Conservative MLA for the Edmonton-McClung riding between 2008 and 2015, serving on several committees. Xiao had unsuccessful runs at a federal Tory nomination in 2004 and 2014.
