2 suspects charged after stolen truck smashes into police cars in Frog Lake

-

Two people are in custody after a pair of RCMP cruisers were rammed by a stolen truck fleeing a Frog Lake, Alta., gas station last week, police said.

Officers with Elk Point RCMP found a suspicious car and a truck parked at a gas station while on patrol around 12:30 a.m. Jan. 15. Both vehicles were previously reported stolen.

The officers, behind the wheels of two separate police cruisers, turned on their emergency lights as they approached the vehicles. The truck took off, smashing into one of the police vehicles headon before colliding with the other cruiser.

The car fled the scene.

The driver later abandoned the vehicle and is still at large.

No one was injured.

The truck driver lost control and hit a stop sign, and both occupants fled on foot. Police arrested them a short time later without incident.

Kannan Desjarlais, 21, of Cold Lake was charged with flight from police, possession of stolen property over $5,000, mischief and failing to comply with a court order. He is to appear in St. Paul provincial court Feb. 1.

Billie Wheaton, 18, also from Cold Lake, was charged with flight from police, possession of stolen property over $5,000, mischief and failing to comply with court orders. She is to appear in Cold Lake provincial court Jan. 24.

Frog Lake is about 250 kilometres east of Edmonton.
