Griffins draw first blood in ACAC hockey final
Tyler Morrison scored twice and Nolan Yaremchuk added an empty-net goal with three minutes left as the MacEwan Griffins beat the NAIT Ooks 7-3 on Friday night at the NAIT Arena to take a 1-0 lead in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association men’s hockey final.
Shots favoured MacEwan, the league’s defending champions, 39-36.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series goes Saturday at Edmonton’s Downtown Community Arena at 6 p.m.
Bears advance at volleyball finals
George Hobern had 10 kills and Taryq Sani scored 18 points to lead the Alberta Golden Bears to a 3-1 win (25-19,25-19,19-25,25-23) over the Queen’s Golden Gaels on Friday in their opening match at the men’s volleyball nationals in Hamilton, Ont.
Momentum shifted many times, with Alberta staving off a Queen’s comeback in the fourth set.
The Gaels built a 10-5 lead before the Bears went on a 12-5 run, including a 6-0 run to end the set, to clinch victory and move on to Saturday’s semifinals against the UBC Thunderbirds, a rematch of the Canada West semifinal which Alberta won.
Pandas rally to beat Carabins They needed to win three straight sets — and they did it.
The Alberta Pandas orchestrated their comeback down 2-0 to the Montreal Carabins in their women’s volleyball nationals semifinal on Friday in Quebec City, winning 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12) at the Laval campus.
Saints clobber Storm in Game 1 Austin Parmiter and Jordan Biro each scored twice and goalie Nolan Kent turned away 11 shots to lead the Spruce Grove Saints to an 8-0 win over the visiting Grande Prairie Storm in Game 1 of their AJHL North Division semifinal on Friday night.
The Storm were never in it. The Saints fired 50 shots at goalies Ethan Slobodzian and CharlesOlivier Levesque, including 21 in the first period.
Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Spruce Grove’s Grant Fuhr Arena at 7 p.m.
