Cafe Linnea introduces more sweet offerings by pastry chef Jake Pelletier

Fans of gorgeous will want to check out the new dessert program at Cafe Linnea, where exquisite afters by pastry chef Jake Pelletier are being paired with cocktails to create a sensory treat.

Three carefully composed options are now on the menu: Pouding Chomeur, a riff on a traditiona­l French Canadian recipe, the St. Lucia, a coconut sponge cake served with passion fruit curd, orange rum and ricotta mousse, and the Chocolate and Fennel offering, prepared with praline, licorice cream, salted caramel and crème fraîche. The new dessert program will be refreshed quarterly.

The desserts have been developed as part of Pelletier’s training for the Saveur Patissier of the Year award, held at the end of May in Melbourne, Australia.

In other Duchess news, the bake shop’s products are now on sale at the West Edmonton Mall’s RAAS, a section of the mall devoted to small and local.

Macaron from Duchess is on sale along with upscale doughnuts created by Doughnut Party, the go-to snack shop located next door to Cafe Linnea at Holland Plaza. The macaron is also available for home delivery through the organic grocery delivery service, SPUD. Cafe Linnea is at 10932 119 St.

Formerly a farmers market vendor, The Colombian is a new, brick-and-mortar shop right beside Vi’s for Pies in the central/west end of the city (#1, 10340 134 St.). Its grand opening is Sunday.

Why Not Café and Bar is hosting a Northern-inspired pop-up next Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the restaurant located on the second floor at 8534 109 St. Chefs Levi Biddlecomb­e and Tyson Wright will be working with chef Robin Wasicuna of Twin Pine Diner in Yellowknif­e. Wasicuna has appeared on Chopped Canada, as well as You Gotta Eat Here. The menu for the evening will feature fusion comfort foods. Dishes will range in price from $10 to $20.

Edmonton’s Chamber of Commerce hosts an evening of food and fun at the Jubilee Auditorium (11455 87 Ave.) next Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. It costs $15 to get in for chamber members, and $30 for others. Food samples are about $3 each and beverage samples will cost between $2 and $4. Vendors featured include Cookies by George, the Westin Hotel, Confetti Sweets, Canadian Brewhouse and Yukon Brewing.

There is a new location for Koutouki restaurant on the city’s south side. Formerly located on Gateway Boulevard at 45 Avenue, the new eatery is in the South Park Shopping Centre (540, 3803 Calgary Trail). Family-owned by Anna and Mo Kurani, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features a belly dancer on Fridays and Saturdays, and for special events.

This year marks the 10th anniversar­y of the Green and Gold Community Garden located on the University of Alberta’s south campus. The garden is a project of the university’s faculty of agricultur­al, life and environmen­tal sciences and is totally volunteer run. All of the money raised goes to the Tubahumuri­ze Associatio­n, a non-profit group in Rwanda which supports women through counsellin­g, vocational training and microloans. To date, the garden has raised more than $290,000 for Tubahumuri­ze.

The garden is looking for volunteers and there is an informatio­n session at the Strathcona Library on April 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kirsta Franke, the founder of the popular summer market, is adding another site to the 124 Street Grand Market brand. Now, in addition to the market that runs Thursdays on 124 Street at 108 Avenue (debuting May 10), Franke is opening another market slightly south of the first. It’s going to run Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on 102 Avenue between 124 Street and 122 Street.

Bündok will be hosting the next Swine and Dine event, with chef Ryan Hotchkiss promising a five-course menu featuring Alberta Pork products, from appetizer to dessert.

Taste of Stony Plain Road, a roundup of food and drink available in the west end area, is happening at The Orange Hub, 10045 156 St. on May 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Some 14 local restaurant­s from the Stony Plain Road Business Associatio­n and 12 local breweries will be getting together to offer samples to the public.

The Chopped Leaf, Only the Good Stuff, King ’s Hot Pot, Red Lobster, Island Cafe and Bistro, and Continenta­l Inn are just a few of the restaurant­s participat­ing. It costs $9 to get in the door, and food and drink samples are between $1 and $3. Tickets are available through eventbrite.

Snack is such a fun word, don’t you think? Well, Alysia Lok, a self-confessed snack addict, has launched a new line of sweet and savoury nibbles, Caramunchi­es, sure to appeal to others who also need a little something to keep moving through the day.

The treat combines chewy caramel with crunchy cornflakes and a variety of other flavours, including peppermint patty, peanut butter and jam, and Colombian mountain coffee. Lok can be found hawking her wares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at MacEwan, at a pop-up near Griffin’s Landing, and also Saturdays at the City Market. Starting in May, she’ll be at the 124 Grand Market on Thursdays and Sundays. You can find Caramunchi­es at the Malaysian restaurant, Golomein Noodle House (2976 Ellwood Dr.), and they are coming soon to the Brown Butter Café (1528 91 St.).
