Caregivers rally at legislature

- EMMA GRANEY

Caregivers affected by the Family Support for Children with Disabilities parent training model for children gathered on the steps of the legislature Monday to voice their concerns.

Liberal house leader David Swann told the rally the training model is putting extra strain on caregivers.

In some cases, he said, it is also being used as an inadequate substitute to providing families with the professional services they need for a child with a disability.

The rally was organized by a concerned mother whose five-yearold son has autism.

PORTALS TO THE PAST RAMP UP NEW EXHIBITS

Alberta’s 20 provincially owned and operated heritage sites and museums are gearing up for the unofficial start of summer, preparing new programs and experiences for the May long weekend.

New programs include a Voyageur Experience at Victoria Settlement near Smoky Lake, where you can strengthen your knowledge of Métis culture and experience what it was like to be a voyageur paddling across Canada in a birchbark canoe.

Around Edmonton, the Vintage Fork Restaurant is a new culinary dining experience at Rutherford House for brunch, lunch and afternoon tea, and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village opens a new exhibit about the work of artist Peter Shostak on May 19.

This summer, Albertans can also explore the story of the McLaughlin family, a family of risk-takers who shaped Canada’s transportation history.

The Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin and Remington Carriage Museum in Cardston have special exhibits.
