Slap jaywalkers with tickets

-

If city officials are really concerned with reducing pedestrian deaths and injuries, why don’t they enforce the existing bylaws?

Bylaw C5590 states that it is jaywalking if you are “crossing, or attempting to cross the road when the “do not walk” is lit or flashing, or if you are facing a red light. If you are ticketed for jaywalking you will be given a $250 fine.”

Obviously, this means that stepping off the curb after the orange “don’t cross” hand begins to flash is jaywalking, something that thousands of Edmontonians do every day.

The number of seconds remaining until the red light comes on is not an invitation to enter the crosswalk.
