Province launches fire-ban app

- STEPHEN COOK

Just ahead of the long weekend, Albertans can now check for fire bans and restrictions using their smartphones.

Forestry and Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier announced the launch of a new Alberta fire ban app Tuesday that allows users to search and pinpoint their own location to identify nearby restrictions. The app is available on Apple and Android devices.

As of Tuesday, there were 88 fire bans and advisories in effect across the province, with one blaze in particular continuing to prove problematic for fire crews northeast of Edmonton.

More than 600 hectares of rural land has been destroyed in Strathcona County since emergency services first detected a fire in the area of Township Road 564 and Range Road 211 on Saturday.

Bulldozers have created 12 kilometres of fire barriers throughout the area, which has helped stabilize the fire.

A helicopter was being used for reconnaissance and water-bucket drops, and crews were working on the ground to extinguish hot spots and flare-ups.

No buildings have been lost and there was no immediate threat to any industry-related assets or infrastructure in the area.

Residents living at two of the three farms that were voluntarily evacuated were expected to return to their homes soon, the county said in a statement Tuesday.

The remaining evacuation was due to a power loss to the residence.

Township Road 562 between Range Road 211 and 213 remained closed.

The launch of the app coincides with the coming May long weekend, a popular time for Albertans to explore public parks.

“It is vital that Albertans be aware of any bans or restrictions throughout the province if they intend to enjoy our beautiful backcountry,” Carlier said in a news release.

Users can also access AlbertaFireBans.ca to view fire restrictions in their browser.

Wildfire danger can be high during the spring because dry grass and leaves may catch fire before new growth begins.

The hot summer months can also be a time of potential calamity, dependent on weather and moisture conditions.

Albertans can also check for wildfires using a previously-released Alberta Wildfire app. To report a wildfire, call 310-FIRE (3473).
