Parts of Sherwood Park hub shuttered by explosion to remain closed for inspection
Strathcona County’s administration hub will reopen to the public next Wednesday following twin explosions in the parkade earlier this month. However the two-level parking facility will continue to be off-limits for some time yet.
Late last week engineers deemed the county hall, community centre and parkade in Sherwood Park to be “structurally sound” but required environmental assessments and cleaning.
That has now been completed.
The parkade, community centre, library, Gallery@501 and Vicky’s Bistro and Wine Bar remain closed until they are properly assessed and cleaned if required.
All of the estimated 100 or so vehicles that had been locked in the parkade following the explosions have now been removed and are being held at a secure lot awaiting pickup by their owners.
RCMP confirmed that the first explosion originated underneath a half-ton truck and damaged nine cars parked in the same row. That caused a second vehicle’s gas tank to explode two stalls away.
The person linked to the explosions, Kane Kosolowsky, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A vehicle belonging to the 21-year-old was found to contain “more than five” registered firearms including hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns. Police have yet to release what type of explosives were used or the motive for the attack.
