FIGURE PAINTER’S ESTATE SALE

-

One of Edmonton’s most recognizable subject-andstyle figure painters, Doug Jahma died of a heart attack last year, leaving a gap in our creative ecosystem. As Jahma noted, “I am moved by the questions raised in the process of a male artist painting females. The political, cultural, sexual and historical aspects combine to create a fertile and expansive subject matter for me. A great stimulus to paint.” This estate sale of his work, through Nov. 30, has already seen the Alberta Foundation for the Arts purchase two of his large works — and whether or not you’re an art collector, it’s worth it to stop by and feel living energy on the walls. Gallery hours: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday.

Details: 11 a.m. at Front Gallery, 10402 124 St., free admission.

MA IRMA PREMIERE AT L’UNITHEATRE

Lights, set design and directed by David Granger, this play stars Marie-Claire Marcotte as Mission Bird, a young woman of relentless curiosity, endowed with a certain social ineptitude. In an attempt to better understand the circumstances of her mother, Irma’s, death, Mission Bird finds her way from the laundromat to a man’s apartment in which she meets a dog — a pug that could sit in its own fat — who is also named Irma. It’s opening night, and the play is in French with surtitles projected live over the stage. Details: 7:30 p.m. at L’UniTheatre, $33 (adult) at lunitheatre.ca

A MUSICAL NIGHT TO ‘NEVER FORGET’

Noted to be “like the love child of Amy Winehouse and Little Richard,” this Halifax, classically trained singer shares her deep love of soul, R&B and jazz, laying it on the floor with a mix of her own songs and spicy covers.

Currently living in Austin, Texas, it was hearing Billie Holiday at age 17 that sent her toward her destiny, which includes playing a stint through Sunday here in the Canadian outback. She notes of her shows, “I definitely want every person to go home saying, ‘I’m never going to forget this.’” Details: 9 p.m. at Blues on Whyte, 10329 82 Ave., no cover.
