The Alberta government raised the transgender pride flag Tuesday to commemorate victims of violence attacked for identifying as transgender.

Flags are raised around the world on Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 to memorialize people who have been assaulted or killed because of transgender hatred or prejudice.

Culture and Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda said his government stands with all victims of violence.

Miranda also outlined his government’s work on LGBTQ rights, including introducing an “X” sex marker on official documents such as driver’s licences and ID cards, developing LGBTQ2S youth housing and shelter guidelines, and amending the Alberta Human Rights Act to include gender identity and expression.

LIQUOR BAG CAMPAIGN ROLLS OUT

Alberta’s youth are creating messages to remind Albertans of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Students Against Drinking and Driving and Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis continue their partnership of six years in the annual liquor bag campaign, in which students in Grades 1-12 can personalize a message on a paper liquor bag to raise awareness on the impact of impaired driving.

Alberta teachers and community supporters can order their free liquor paper bags, which will serve as a canvas for students’ designs, until Dec. 12. The completed bags are then dropped off at select local liquor stores by school staff to provide a visual reminder to customers not to drink and drive.
