Ex- teacher jailed for sex as­sault on stu­dent

A for­mer Cal­gary phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion teacher has been handed a 30-month jail sen­tence af­ter plead­ing guilty to sex­u­ally as­sault­ing a stu­dent over a twoyear pe­riod. Ed­win Cay Arias, 46, a for­mer teacher at Bishop McNally High School, was also or­dered this week to pay a $200 fine. Arias pleaded guilty in June to the of­fence, which in­volved a fe­male stu­dent who was 16 years old when the in­ap­pro­pri­ate re­la­tion­ship started in 2007. While the age of con­sent in 2007 was 14, po­lice say Arias was in “a po­si­tion of trust and au­thor­ity over the vic­tim for the du­ra­tion of the al­leged of­fences.”Cal­gary’s Catholic school board had em­ployed Arias for 14 years and had been at Bishop McNally since 2005.
