Ex- teacher jailed for sex assault on student
A former Calgary physical education teacher has been handed a 30-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a student over a twoyear period. Edwin Cay Arias, 46, a former teacher at Bishop McNally High School, was also ordered this week to pay a $200 fine. Arias pleaded guilty in June to the offence, which involved a female student who was 16 years old when the inappropriate relationship started in 2007. While the age of consent in 2007 was 14, police say Arias was in “a position of trust and authority over the victim for the duration of the alleged offences.”Calgary’s Catholic school board had employed Arias for 14 years and had been at Bishop McNally since 2005.
