DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
Woman killed in west end incident
Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 49-yearold woman in what they say is a case of domestic violence in west Edmonton’s Breckenridge Greens neighbourhood Friday.
Officers received a call about an assault with a weapon at 8:50 a.m. at a home near 214 Street and Breckenridge Drive, and arrived to find an injured woman. She died at the scene from undisclosed injuries.
Breckenridge Drive was closed to traffic for about two hours before being reopened just after 11 a.m. as police investigated. Members of the canine unit and heavily-armed tactical officers could be seen in the area.
A 53-year-old man investigators say is believed to be involved in the woman’s death turned himself in to police just after 10 a.m. He remained in custody with charges pending on Friday afternoon.
Police said they are not seeking additional suspects.
“Investigators believe the male and female were known to one another and that this was a domestic violence incident,” police spokesperson Carolin Maran said in an email.
Maran said police have decided against naming the victim as it “does not serve an investigative purpose” and the force has “a duty to protect the privacy rights of the victims and their families.”
By around noon, homicide detectives were going door to door canvassing neighbours.
Police had parked two vehicles, including a large van, in the driveway of a home at 1439 Breckenridge Dr.
The door to the garage of the home was left open, partially obscured by the police vehicles and a reflective sheet. Two vehicles, which appeared to be SUVs, were parked in the garage.
A property title search listed Wen Lan Bu and Wen Zhou Zhang as the owners of the home.
An autopsy is yet to be scheduled, but if the death is confirmed a homicide it would be Edmonton’s 30th of 2018.
