Ackard Contractors Ltd.
From its start more than 35 years ago, Ackard Contractors Ltd. has grown to become a major custom renovator and builder, with more than 50 employees.
But it has remained true to the values set out by the two families that are still at the helm: Aquilino and Maryanne Naccarato, and Richard and Valerie Plamondon – friends since high school.
For the fifth year in a row, Ackard Contractors Ltd. is the Gold winner in the Home Renovator category in the Edmonton Journal Readers’ Choice Awards.
“It’s a pretty special award,” says Richard Plamondon, noting that it’s voted on by the public rather than being an industry-specific award.
Plamondon says from the beginning, he and Aquilino set out high expectations for their work, and have assembled a team that can deliver on that promise.
“None of this would be possible without our employees,” he says, adding the company strives to create a workplace that encourages excellence yet is a great place to work.
Plamondon was reminded of this positive attitude recently when a fairly new employee said to him: “I don’t think I’ve ever worked at a company where everybody seems to be happy to be here every day.”
When it comes to serving the public, Ackard Contractors can look after any renovation project, big or small.
“We have the resources, we have the design team, we have the craftsmen, we have the in-house carpenters, we have the cabinet makers and finishers, and even an electrical division,” says Plamondon.
With its longevity, Ackard Contractors has also built a showcase of work throughout the region.
“There are not too many mature neighbourhoods in Edmonton where we haven’t done some projects,” says Plamondon.
“(But) at the end of the day what’s made us successful is that we never back down from a problem.”
If any issue should arise for a client, the company will work with the customers to address it.
“We’ve always tried to work it through, with communication, the best we can. That can be difficult at times but it’s got to be done. That’s the key.”
Ackard Contractors also tries to give back to the community that has made it a success, by supporting with funds and time many worthwhile organizations and charities in the city that help those less fortunate.
“You only get back in life what you give,” says Plamondon.
