Golden Rice Bowl

Authentic Chinese food has loyal following

Miranda Lau is pleased that her restaurant, the Golden Rice Bowl, once again wins Gold in the Dim Sum category of the Edmonton Journal Readers’ Choice Awards.

“It feels good,” says Lau. “It’s been five years in a row now.”

It’s no surprise that Edmonton Journal readers have voted for the Golden Rice Bowl restaurant in the Dim Sum category consistently. The restaurant has been in business since 1970, offering delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine.

“We emphasize that it is traditional Chinese food, not the Canadianized Chinese food, with the sugar and the MSG,” explains Lau.

The menu aims to serve only the highest-quality traditional Chinese food, not altered versions of the dishes to please Canadian palates. The Golden Rice Bowl’s most popular dishes are their Dim Sum, the signature beef and seafood dishes, as well as sticky rice.

“We sell hundreds of those dishes every day,” says Lau.

Lau bought the Golden Rice Bowl 12 years ago and decided to give the restaurant and the menu a fresh new look. They fully renovated the restaurant and hired a new head chef, the former executive chef at a five-star hotel in Hong Kong, to optimize the dining experience.

Being in business for over 45 years has created some very loyal customers. Some patrons come in every day for lunch from Monday to Friday, and then bring their families in on the weekends.

“Some customers come here six days a week,” Lau explains happily.

The Golden Rice Bowl offers 10 per cent off and a free soft drink to first-time customers, who are also entered in a draw for a $100 gift certificate to the Golden Rice Bowl.

Unlike most restaurants, the Golden Rice Bowl is open 7 days a week (11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday) and opens earlier than usual on Saturday, Sunday and holidays (9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.) Catering services and delivery through Skip the Dishes and DoorDash are also offered.

When asked to summarize the Golden Rice Bowl, Lau sums it up to good food and good service.

“You should come in to taste the difference,” says Lau.
