Italian Centre Shop

Bustling shop a fun gathering place

- JoAnne mcGoWAn

When Frank Spinelli opened the Italian Centre Shop in Edmonton’s Little Italy nearly 60 years ago, few could have imagined that his modest European market would grow to become a local powerhouse, with three locations in the city and another in Calgary.

Voted once again as this year’s Gold winner for both best cheese shop and best deli in Edmonton, the Italian Centre Shop has come a long way from its humble beginnings of importing magazines and chocolates from the Old Country. It continues to be steeped in tradition and authenticity.

“Our customers love the experience of coming to the Shop,” says Frank’s daughter Teresa, who took over as president of the family business after he passed away 18 years ago. “Not only is it a cultural experience, but our staff love what they do and are very knowledgeable and able to offer great advice on product selection.”

With the option of choosing from over 300 deli items — both from local suppliers and imported from across North America and Europe — the assistance of staff often proves invaluable.

“When in doubt, ask to try a sample!” says Teresa. “The lists of items and the lineup may be daunting, but our staff will help guide a firsttimer through whatever their needs are, and also make some recommendations for new items to try.”

In the New Year, the Italian Centre Shop will continue to bring in new and unique products while ensuring their stores remain a favourite gathering place.

“Our stores are always watching trends and bringing in new products to try —many from around the world and, as often as possible, some from nearby that allow us to support new, local Canadian producers,” says Teresa. “It’s a bustling and busy place, but we’re a big family here, and we want our customers to feel a part of that.”
