Old Strathcona Antique Mall

Antique mall keeps up with the times

-

‘This ain’t your Grandma’s antique store!’ is the motto co-owners Betty Reitan and Bobbi Weibel live by. This mother and daughter duo jointly run the Old Strathcona Antique Mall, Gold winner in the Best Antique Store and Best Comic/Collectibles Shop, and Bronze winner in the Best Ice Cream Shop category.

“A huge ‘thank you’ to the people of Edmonton who voted for us. We are humbled and grateful for your continued support of our local business,” says Reitan.

Since purchasing the business in 2009, the two, along with their 100-plus vendors, have focused on following design trends and changing with the times. While you can still find many true antiques of 100 years old or more, at The Old Strathcona Antique Mall you will also find many Mid-Century Modern pieces, lots of kitsch and a ton of vintage pieces.

“Our main customer demographic is 18 to 45 years old,” says Reitan. “This demographic not only wants something that is beautiful and fits in with their décor but also something that has a purpose. Something that won’t sit on a shelf or in a drawer for 50 weeks of the year but something that they will see and use constantly.”

The Old Strathcona Antique Mall hosts multiple events throughout the year. One of their most popular is the Vintage Kitchen Show & Sale which sees thousands of customers come just to get their hands on some of the hot Pyrex colours: pink and turquoise. “Pyrex, if taken care of, just never wears out. Folks love it because they can use it on a daily basis,” Weibel chimes in.

The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is open seven days a week and is a great place to bring family, friends or out-of-town guests. And yes, if you need a break after browsing for a couple of hours, you could always stop for ice cream or a milkshake in their Diner.
