Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association
For more than two decades, Edmontonians have been traveling to the site of Keillor Farm to learn horseback riding from the dedicated instructors at Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA). Founded in 1998 with the support of the City of Edmonton, WELCA is committed to serving riders of all ages and abilities.
“We would like to thank our supporters and riders in Edmonton, especially those who have been with us since the beginning,” says Diane David, Executive Director of WELCA.
“As Edmonton’s community-based recreational riding facility, we aim to be inclusive, accessible while putting the safety of the horses and riders first.”
David’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility is so strong that she has twice been nominated for the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service to persons with disabilities. In 2013, WELCA received the first Opus Award from the Gateway Association for their service to adults with developmental disabilities. And, the new arena facility was recently presented with the Mayor’s Award for Accessible Buildings.
WELCA runs very popular learn-toride and horsemanship programs for children and adults as well as summer camps, field trips, tours and clinics. Classes are open to riders as young as four, and WELCA is proud to support the fitness and well-being of all Edmontonians, regardless of age or ability.
In 2019, the Association celebrates the 100th anniversary of Keillor Farms. Keillor Log Cabin is the oldest building on the land. Built in 1919, it is now a provincial-designated historical building and always worth a visit.
Also in 2019, WELCA celebrates the 60th anniversary of LeeColl Stables, as the outfit was known from the mid 1950s to 1978. Bill Collins, well-known cutting and reining champion, founded the stable which was instrumental in establishing the Edmonton region as a centre for horses and equestrian sport.
Winter session for the Association begins in January, and WELCA instructors are eager to welcome new members to the WELCA family, especially first-time riders. Visitors are welcome to the grounds, can observe lessons, and even pack a picnic during the summer months.
To learn more, visit welca.ca or email info@welca.ca , where you can see a full schedule of classes and events, book a party, and even e-meet some of their gentle and well-trained horses. WELCA also accepts donations and is always open to community volunteers.
