YMCA inspires healthy living for all

Whether you’re a fitness buff or a newcomer to the workout scene, finding the right health club can be an intimidating process without the guidance that comes from healthy-living professionals — and the staff at the YMCA of Northern Alberta can provide just that.

Voted as the Gold winner in the fitness / health club category and Silver for summer camps, Kent Bittorf, the YMCA’s Vice President of Health, Fitness & Aquatics, explains why the YMCA stands out among the rest.

“The YMCA is always working to support strong kids, healthy families, and thriving communities,” describes Bittorf. “When a person becomes a member, they’re a part of something bigger — a community where everyone belongs.”

Membership benefits include access to swimming lessons, over 80 group fitness classes, more than 30 sports and recreation programs, youth leadership programs, and kids programs that include their sought-after summer, PD day, and winter camps.

“We deliver a unique blend of quality programs that build confidence, improve social skills, and foster independence and leadership,” says Bittorf. “And, most importantly, our day camps are really fun, with themes for a range of interests — art, science, circus, cooking, and plenty of sports options.”

Best of all, having a family membership to the YMCA ensures that families can get healthy together.

“The YMCA is built for families! We offer childminding while you work out, and also a variety of preschool, child, and youth programs,” says Bittorf. “We’re also excited to offer Baby & Me Bootcamp, Barre, and Aquatic Fitness classes for parents and little ones to stay active while spending time together.”

Some YMCAs in the city have undergone renovations and upgrades to create new spaces for children’s programs and group fitness. The programs offered may differ by area, but all locations provide a variety of options for families and individuals alike.

Adds Bittorf: “When you first come into a YMCA, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff at the front desk, who will give you an information package, a facility tour, and a free fitness consultation with our certified workout centre staff to get you started on your fitness journey.”
