Southgate Centre has once again been recognized as the city’s top shopping destination in the Edmonton Journal Readers’ Choice Awards, and the team at Southgate couldn’t be happier.

“It was fantastic to hear of this news,” says Vivian Wagner, General Manager of Southgate Centre. “We are pleased that readers have once again chosen Southgate as their favourite shopping destination for the fourth year a row!

“At Southgate, we are constantly striving to elevate the shopping experience for our guests with an incredible retail mix, an attractive environment, and innovative marketing campaigns. We are always changing and evolving so that shoppers can experience something new each time they visit.”

Southgate Centre opened its doors in 1970 in an area that had been farmland just a few years before. With just a Woodwards, Food Floor (the 1970s term for a food court), and a Hudson’s Bay, Southgate was the largest Canadian shopping centre outside of Toronto when it was built.

Southgate has undergone many changes since its opening 48 years ago, including three large-scale expansions and renovations. These enhancements almost tripled their floorplan and brought some of the best names in fashion to Edmonton. Their most recent expansion in 2009 added an unmatched level of refinement to the retail experience in the city.

Southgate features some stores exclusive to Edmonton, including Crate and Barrel, LEGO, and Restoration Hardware, as well as some highend shopping destinations, including lululemon, Apple and Michael Kors.

The team at Southgate is proud of the fact that they have hosted several generations of shoppers and their families.

“Southgate has been a popular gathering place on the south side of Edmonton for 48 years and we have been fortunate to have multi-generational shoppers who have been very loyal to our centre over the years,” explains Wagner.

“We have expanded and renovated several times since we opened, and are excited about the many new changes to come in the future.”

In 2018, shoppers may have been delighted to see some new and exciting shops open at Southgate Centre, including Edmonton’s only Nespresso store, featuring new, interactive concepts and several coffee bars, which opened in November. Earlier this year, Poppy Barley, a local business that designs and makes custom boots, shoes and accessories for customers, opened and then expanded their new boutique store. Aritzia, a staple at Southgate, expanded into a beautiful new store in the west atrium. Squish Candy and Sweet Jesus also opened in 2018 for all those with a sweet tooth; and the 100 per cent Canadian-owned and operated Hillberg & Berk brought their attainable luxury fashion jewellery to Southgate this year as well.

Shoppers can look forward to some new and exciting changes to Southgate Centre in the New Year.

“In 2019, customers can expect new stores to be added to our retail mix, along with exciting events and campaigns, such as A La Mode and the Art of Denim, that will create unique and memorable experience for our guests,” says Wagner. “In the long-term, guests can expect to learn more about the exciting re-development plans we have for our former Sears space.”

Southgate is very grateful to all the customers they’ve had the pleasure of serving over the years. They feel honoured to get to be such an integral part of Edmonton’s shopping scene, says Wagner.

“First and foremost we would like to thank our community for including us in their daily lives by shopping at Southgate.”

Southgate Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Their website is www.southgatecentre.com @southgatecentre on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
