Nurse, Rattie shoot to thrill at skills event

- Robert Tychkowski

With one shot, Darnell Nurse generated the loudest roar of the day at the Edmonton Oilers skills competition Sunday.

Nurse ripped one 102.1 m.p.h. in the hardest-shot competition, beating out Matt Benning (101.0) and Milan Lucic (100.8).

“It’s like the 100-metre dash in track. It’s one of those things that catches everyone’s attention and is over quick,” said Nurse. “We had a good time with it and it was fun to step into one.”

Does he plan on shooting more now?

“I told the guys there will be no passing for the next couple of weeks,” Nurse said with a laugh.

Ty Rattie might have had the most impressive showing of the day, going four-for-four in the accuracy shooting competition, busting all four targets in 8.008 seconds.

Ryan Spooner won the fastest skater event (which was fun but rather anticlimactic in the absence of a sick Connor McDavid) in a time of 14.445, edging Tobias Rieder (14.496) and Jesse Puljujarvi (14.688).
