OTTAWA, N.W.T. PLAN TOGETHER TO SAVE THREATENED CARIBOU
Ottawa and the Northwest Territories have reached a deal on protecting threatened caribou. the federal government and the n.W.t. made an agreement that the territory would file range plans to conserve several herds of boreal caribou, which live in forested regions along the territory’s western edge. those herds are some of canada’s healthiest — totalling 6,000 strong on habitat that is almost 70 per cent undisturbed, well above the federal threshold of 65 per cent. ottawa has agreed to give the territory $4.5 million to develop range plans, as well as determine sustainable harvest limits. the first of those plans is due by late summer. But one environmental group calls so-called section 11 agreements — draft versions of which have been reached with other provinces — plans to keep planning.
