CALIFORNIA HALTS EXECUTIONS ON GOVERNOR’S ORDER
The state of California is to place a moratorium on executions and grant a reprieve to 737 killers, a quarter of all the people on death row in america. Gavin newsom, the state’s newly elected democratic governor, said capital punishment was “inconsistent with our bedrock values.” amid a lengthy appeals process, the state has not put anyone to death since 2006, when arnold schwarzenegger was governor. It therefore has significantly more people on death row than any other state. none of those prisoners will be released, or have their convictions overturned, as a result of the moratorium. In 2016, californians rejected ending the death penalty in a referendum. donald trump excoriated the governor on twitter, accusing him of “defying voters” and offering leniency to “737 stone cold killers.”
