Research shows summer camp has a positive effect on children and youth
Camp isn’t just a way to pass the summer — it can be a life-changing experience. According to the University of Waterloo’s Summer Camp Research Project, going to summer camp is proven to have a positive effect on social integration, attitudes towards physical activity, self-confidence, personal development, environmental awareness and emotional intelligence. This research proves what campers and counsellors have known all along!
Parents looking for a wide offering of summer day camp programs can find the right camp for their child at the YMCA, which is Canada’s largest summer camp provider. When kids attend YMCA camps, they’ll build confidence, improve their social skills, and gain independence and leadership skills. The opportunity to try new activities can spark a new hobby or passion. Through the connections they’ll build with other campers and YMCA staff, children will be encouraged to reach for the best in themselves, and in others, every day — all while having fun!
Helping young people grow up healthy, active and engaged is why the Y exists. For more than 100 years, children and youth have been spending their summers discovering a love of sport and physical activity, learning new skills in arts and sciences, gaining the life skill of swimming, and making friendships that go well beyond their week of summer camp.
