Downtown library renos were needed
Re. “Buildings don’t last long in our city,” Letters, May 9
Like Mr. Bianchini, the Edmonton Public Library appreciates and respects the historical significance of our central library.
The building renovations underway are necessary to address several structural and safety code concerns, such as asbestos removal, adherence to current fire safety code standards, updated mechanical and electrical systems and improved energy efficiency.
In addition, the redesign of the Stanley A. Milner Library incorporates features within the building that will allow future generations to modernize and upgrade the structure as community needs evolve and as building requirements dictate.
This is similar to what we’ve done with our Strathcona Branch, which is now 106 years old, and has undergone necessary enhancements to ensure its longevity. Although we’re uncertain what renovations the building will undergo in the future, our hope is the time capsule will remain closed for 100 years until the next generation celebrates their accomplishments and reflects on what we have left as a legacy.
Today, just as it was a century ago, the Edmonton Public Library is a place where everyone is welcome, where you can find a quiet space to read or relax and where children and parents can learn, laugh and bond during story times. Our buildings may change, what is on our shelves will most certainly change, but EPL will always be a place for people. I’m sure all the same things will ring just as true 100 years from now as they do for us today. Pilar Martinez, chief executive officer, EPL
