Winners store to move in as Chapters announces closure of Whyte Ave. store

- JASON HERRING

A longtime Whyte Avenue staple is closing its doors at the end of the year.

The Chapters Strathcona branch, on the corner of Whyte Avenue and 105 Street, will cease operations in January after deciding not to renew its lease. The branch opened in 1998.

“After over 20 wonderful years at Chapters Strathcona, we can confirm that we will not be renewing our lease and that the store will be closing in a few months,” said Chapters public relations director Kate Gregory in a statement.

“Though this was a difficult decision, we are dedicated to the community and look forward to continuing to serve our customers through our 15 Indigo, Chapters, Coles and Indigospirit locations in Edmonton, as well as at indigo.ca.”

After closing in January, the renovations are expected to begin immediately to accommodate the space’s new tenant — clothing chain Winners.

Winners declined to comment Monday, saying they’d release more details closer to the store’s launch.
