Multiple lightning strikes were detected within 480 km of the North Pole on Saturday, a rarity that led the U.S. Weather Service to issue a statement describing it as one of the “furthest north lightning strikes in Alaska forecaster memory.” The bolts came from towering storm clouds that, at lower latitudes, would amount to ordinary thunderstorms.
