REDS CLAIM GALVIS OFF WAIVERS

-

The Cincinnati Reds claimed shortstop Freddy Galvis off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.

Galvis, batting .267 with 18 homers and 54 RBIS in 116 games with the Blue Jays, was viewed as expendable due to the arrival of promising 21-year-old shortstop Bo Bichette. Galvis is making US$4 million in base salary this season and has a team option of $5.5 million for 2020 with a $1-million buyout. Later, the Blue Jays swung the bats as well as they have all season in crushing the Texas Rangers 19-4 in the first of three at Rogers Centre. The team set a franchise record for extra-base hits with 13 (nine doubles and four home runs) and tied for the third-most runs a Jays team has scored in a game, while the 21 hits were tied for ninth best. Brandon Drury hit his first career grand slam.
