Donaldson roughs up Blue Jays

- ROB LONGLEY

ATLANTA The Bringer of Rain was the deliverer of pain to his former team on Monday.

Josh Donaldson blasted a tworun homer in the first-inning at Suntrust Park as the Braves posted a 6-3 win.

Not only that, the former Toronto all-star scored twice more — once after reaching via a walk in the sixth inning and again in the eighth on a Bo Bichette error that helped the Braves add on a pair of insurance runs.

Donaldson has been on a tear for most of the summer, launching 26 homers since June 11. He’s certainly been a force in the Braves moving to 31 games over .500 (85-54) and looking to lock up first place in the National League East.

Toronto is 55-84. Only Kansas City (49), Miami (48), Baltimore (45) and Detroit (40) have fewer wins this season.

Donaldson is not far off the pace of his 41-homer season in 2015 that earned him American League MVP honours while with the Jays.

Donaldson’s homer began a rough outing for Toronto starter Jacob Waguespack, who gave up four runs over four innings.

The Jays were once again dogged by some sloppy play — committing three errors on the afternoon.

Calgary native Mike Soroka went five innings for the win for the Braves. The rookie starter allowed five hits and three runs.

Once again, the Jays offence featured the long ball. Unfortunately, there were no runners on base to maximize the damage. Randal Grichuk hit his team-leading 24th in the fourth inning, while in the fifth, Rowdy Tellez swatted his 16th as he pinch-hit for Waguespack.

The Jays’ interleague 3-16 record this season is the worst in the majors and in club history. The most games they’ve previously lost to NL opponents was 11.
