Cookie monsters at seniors’ home
Elsie Cruey — an 83-year-old grandmother in a Virginia eldercare home — was hit with a lease violation for taking too many cookies to her room for a latenight snack. One former resident described people receiving violations for cursing and taking an extra sausage at breakfast. After
local media coverage, offers of cookies came from as far away as California, one with a note suggesting they would be on endless supply so the staff needn’t “waste time looking out for cookie monsters,” and that it would be OK for staff to take some for their own late-night snacks. “If it will help your company stop picking on little old ladies,” another said, “… I would be happy to donate a monthly cookie platter to help offset any losses Ms. Elsie may have caused.” Cruey also received offers to cover her legal fees, and of free accommodation elsewhere, though she now will be able to stay put for at least another year.
