Kuhlmann’s Greenhouse

Garden centre has deep roots

- AMY HANCOCK

Anita Mcdonald of Kuhlmann’s Greenhouse is thrilled to have once again won Gold in the best Greenhouse/nursery/garden Centre category of the Edmonton Journal Readers’ Choice Awards.

“It’s good to know that Edmonton gardeners are keeping our familyowned greenhouse in mind,” she says.

The greenhouse is a long-standing fixture in Edmonton’s gardening scene. Anita’s parents opened the business back in 1962, starting off as a market garden operation, primarily growing and selling fresh vegetables. In 1975, they opened their first greenhouse and began to sell bedding plants, hanging baskets and vegetable transplants. Quickly, one greenhouse grew into two and three.

In 1983, Anita and her sister, Angela, with their husbands all became partners in the business and they opened a larger-scale greenhouse and garden centre on 167 Avenue in Northeast Edmonton. Since then, Kuhlmann’s has been selling fresh vegetables directly to customers at the Downtown, St. Albert and Capilano Mall Farmers’ Markets and at their farm store year-round.

While they are currently still selling winter vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, cabbage, onions and turnips, their garden shop has been transformed into a Christmas store prior to the holidays. They’ve brought in European baking and cookies and are featuring decorated trees inside the greenhouse. Their flower shop is creating colourful fresh table centres, beautiful poinsettia plants and festive outdoor arrangements. Additionally, patrons can purchase home décor, tree ornaments, wall hangings and table cloths. When browsing the Holiday store, customers can find Christmas themed Gifts and Ornaments for 50 per cent off now and until Christmas.

The Kuhlmann Family is proud to again be awarded the Gold Readers’ Choice Award for best Greenhouse & Garden Centre and to have been able to assist Edmontonians for so long.

“We’ve been serving Edmonton for many years,” she explains.

“We like to make sure that we provide the best products and service for our clients. We may not be the largest but we are the best!”
