EL CHAPO’S SINALOA CARTEL HANDS OUT AID
The daughter of possibly the world’s most famous drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, has appeared on camera handing out aid to coronavirus-hit communities in Mexico as the crime gangs seize an opportunity.
Wearing a face mask, Alejandrina Guzman is seen packing bags of pasta, toilet roll and other supplies into boxes bearing the portrait of her father, founder of the Sinaloa cartel and who is now serving a life sentence in an American jail.
The Sinaloa cartel is not the only Mexican crime gang “helping” impoverished families with reports that the notorious Zetas gangs are also supporting people struggling under lockdown in the areas they control.
“This so-called philanthropy is also used by the cartels deliberately to win the sympathy of the same people they terrorize,” says Siria Gastelum, who works for the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
