Alberta records 71 new COVID-19 cases

Canada Day gatherings should be held outdoors, Hinshaw says

Alberta recorded 71 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, the highest number of new cases since midmay.

The number of active infections of the virus now stands at 559 while 7,354 people have recovered, according to the latest provincial data. There have been a total of 8,067 confirmed cases of COVID-19. In the Edmonton zone, there have been 1,017 confirmed cases and 257 of those are still active.

Across the province, there are 41 people hospitaliz­ed with COVID-19, nine of whom are in intensive care units.

In a tweet Monday, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the risk of spreading COVID-19 is lower outdoors.

With Canada Day approachin­g, Hinshaw suggested planning activities outside with two-metre physical distancing.

“If you don’t have a yard or it’s too small — meet at a park or one of Alberta’s green spaces,” she wrote.

The Calgary zone has 239 active cases and 4,981 recovered cases while the south zone has 26 active cases and 1,269 recovered cases. The north zone and central zone have 32 active cases and 258 recovered cases, and four active cases and 87 recovered cases, respective­ly.

No new deaths were reported on Monday, leaving that total at 154. Of those who have died due to the virus, 112 have been in the Calgary zone, 16 in the north zone, 15 in the Edmonton zone, 10 in the south zone and one in the central zone.

Thirty-five per cent of all COVID-19 cases in the province are among people aged 20 to 39 years old.

There have been 748 confirmed cases in health-care workers of the virus, of which 32 are still active.

In Canada, there have been 103,250 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 8,522 deaths, the latest numbers from the Government of Canada show. Globally, there have been 10,021,401 confirmed cases and 499,913 deaths, according to the World Health Organizati­on.
