A woman in her twenties and more than two dozen pigs died after a crash involving a cattle hauler north of Valleyview Wednesday morning, police say.

Mounties say a semi-tractor pulling a cattle hauler was travelling south down Highway 49 when it was in a collision with a car heading north near Township Road 713, known as Old High Prairie Road, around 11:50 a.m. Police don’t know what caused the crash.

The 23-year-old female driver, who was the only person inside the car, died at the scene. The other driver suffered minor injuries.

Const. Patrick Lambert said more than two dozen pigs were also either killed in the crash or were severely injured and then euthanized.

“The veterinarians on-site were able to humanely euthanized a number of the swine that were severely injured,” he said Wednesday.

Police closed the road for most of the day to investigate the crash. Traffic was down to one lane by Wednesday evening.
