CASTLES OF BUTTER

- Fish Griwkowsky fgriwkowsky@postmedia.com Twitter: @fisheyefoto

Lowlands Project Spaces kicks off its first-ever show with a group effort outside by artists including Adrianne Lee, Borys Tarasenko, Dara Humniski, Haylee Fortin, Maya Candler + Kaida Kobylka, Morgan Melenka, Nasarimba, Paul Freeman, Raneece Buddan, Roseanna Nay + Brad Fehr. The melty theme is a direct comment on our unsure times, which the artists responded to in sculpture, painting and even animal skins. It’s a big yard (come in the front — they’ll be taking names for contact tracing purposes) and the opening runs all day, and while you’re in the hood feel free to try a bagel or three from June’s, within eyeshot of the neighbourhood gallery. A nice antidote to all the doom and gloom about. Details: noon-10 p.m. at Lowlands Project Space (11208 65 St.), $10 (sliding scale, come either way)

WHERE ARE YOUR STORIES?

Over the last two months, The Horizon Lab has been creating brand-new theatrical content, a series of 10-minute performances running under the theme, Where Are Your Stories? The first live audiences in half a year continue Saturday with this celebration of BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and disabled artists’ narratives. Just a key note: the Citadel opens at 6:45 p.m. with just two entrances open, the south exterior doors or via the elevator in the library parkade. 14+ and strong language warning, which should also be applied to pretty much anywhere in the downtown core these days, honestly.

Details: 7:30 p.m. at Shoctor Theatre (9828 101A Ave.), free with booking at citadeltheatre. com

AYLA BROOK & THE SOUND MEN

The first of two pop-up shows (Aug. 29 and Sept. 4), one of Edmonton’s tightest and best-sounding bands, thanks to pretty well everyone in the band literally being a sound guy. But it’s actually Brook’s songwriting and I’d say honest heart that glues it all together, worth checking out live. To find out where the events are — part of the weirdness of now is arrangements like these — contact the band through social media at @aylabrookmusic and, if it’s not full, they’ll tell you. Yep, it’s like that — a treasure hunt of sorts … but that’s how you get to the gold, little digger.

Details: 3 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at mystery location, free but please donate to the passed hat
