Despite having a stellar week that included an 8-1 record in the round robin, Canada's Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant were unceremoniously bounced from the world mixed doubles curling championship on Friday.

The Canadians fell 6-5 to Maia and Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway in an elimination playoff game in Geneva.

Norway moved on to play Switzerland (Alina Paetz and Sven Michel) in one of Friday's semifinals, while surprising Germany (Pia-lisa Schoell and Klaudius Harsch) was taking on unbeaten Scotland (Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie).

Canada likely deserved a better fate. Peterman and Gallant were among the top performers in the tournament heading into Friday's game. However, they missed a few shots when they needed them in the playoff game and that was the difference.

Canada led 5-4 heading into the eighth and final end but the Norwegians were able to manufacture a deuce and pull out the victory.

Maia Ramsfjell made a short raise takeout in the final end to record the deuce.

“We're happy with our performance throughout the week but not our best performance here today,” Peterman said. “It's disappointing. We were hoping for a better result.”

Canada has never won a gold medal at the world mixed doubles championship and has just two silver medals and two bronze over 14 appearances.

The Canadians were in control of this game until the sixth end. A miss by Peterman on a difficult attempt with last rock led to a steal of two for Norway. That started the chain of events that led to Norway 's win.

“I just kind of lost my draw weight in the sixth and eighth ends,” Gallant said. “And they were able to make some good shots and get some angles set up. It's disappointing.”
