Ukrainian Film Festival to screen Oscar-winning 20 Days in Mariupol
For the second year running, the excellent Ukrainian Film Festival is running at Edmonton's Metro Cinema, presenting a mix of fiction and documentary films released in the last few years, as well as some in-person filmmakers.
Its six films include director Mstyslav Chernov's Oscar-winning 20 Days in Mariupol, which added a 9:30 p.m. Saturday second screening after its opening show sold out. Also on the roster is Tonya Noyabrova's Soviet-Ukraine era coming-of-age Do You Love Me?, war documentary In the Rearview featuring a Q-and-A with producer Anna Palenchuk, Nariman Aliev's Crimean Tartar family drama Homeward, Donbas documentary We Will Not Fade Away with a Q-and-A with director Alisa Kovalenko and Anontio Lukich's comedy Luxembourg, Luxembourg, about two conflicted brothers in search of their estranged father.
The languages we'll be hearing include Ukrainian, Russian, English, Polish, Latin, French and Crimean Tatar, with English subtitles where appropriate.
The festival is co-presented by the Alberta Society for the Advancement of Ukrainian Studies and by the Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, in co-operation with the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at MacEwan University.
All of these screenings running Friday through Sunday are free of charge. Simply register in advance at ukrfilmfestival.com, where the full festival schedule also resides.
