STANSBERRY, James

-

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Stansberry, who left us peacefully in his sleep on April 12, 2024, at his home in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Born in Edmonton on April 7, 1950, to Helen (née Davis) and James Stansberry Sr., Jim was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother and community leader.

Jim’s life was filled with love, laughter, and service. He married the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Groff, on June 24, 1972. Together, they built a life filled with joy, adventures, and the bustling energy of a loving family. Jim was a devoted father and grandfather and an enthusiastic supporter of all their sports and activities.

An avid collector, Jim also loved the outdoors, often taking his family on trips in their motorhome, enjoying ski weekends, summers at the lake, and numerous cruises with Pat and the family. He was always willing to help friends and neighbours, was a boy scout leader for many years, and enjoyed coaching soccer, swimming and ringette. His contributions to his community did not go unnoticed; in 2002 he was a recipient of the Pride of Strathcona County Award and the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Medal, awarded to Canadians who made exemplary contributions to their communities.

Jim had an illustrious career as a civil engineer after graduating from the University of Alberta with a Degree in Engineering (with an unofficial minor in playing bridge with his friends), and later a Master’s in Business Administration. His career began on road crews, but his exceptional skill and dedication saw him rise to become the Director of Transportation then Solid Waste Removal for the City of Edmonton. Jim concluded his professional journey as the Manager of Engineering and Planning for the Town of Beaumont.

Jim is survived by his wife Pat; his loving children: Michael (partners Camil and Spencer), Karen (Steven), Laura, and Heather (Ken); and his cherished grandchildren: Elias, Claire, Blake, Parker and Jaxtyn. He also leaves behind his younger sister, whose companionship and support were always precious to him.

There will be a private family graveside service at the Glenwood Cemetery in Sherwood Park on the morning of Sunday, April 28. The family invites family, friends, and those who want to celebrate him, to attend his Celebration of Life at the Sherwood Park Log Cabin (50 Spruce Avenue, Sherwood Park) on April 28, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundations.

Jim’s legacy of generosity, integrity, and dedication to his family and community will forever be remembered by all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Jim, until we meet again.
