EDELMANN, Judith (Judy)

Dec 3, 1930 - Apr 21, 2024

-

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Judith (Judy) Edelmann (née Szanto) passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024 surrounded by her family. A strong, caring and resilient force of nature, a holocaust survivor, a 4ft 10" bundle of love, dignity and generosity of spirit, Judy was an inspiration to everyone who was fortunate enough to meet her.

Born in Budapest in 1930, Judy had a happy upbringing until the outbreak of WWII when horrors of the Holocaust left her orphaned at 13. After some time in hiding, and being rescued by Raoul Wallenberg, she made her way to Winnipeg, Canada in 1948, then to Toronto where she met Eugene Edelmann, also a holocaust survivor from Hungary. They married in 1952 and eventually made their way to Edmonton, Alberta where they established the well-known Bon Ton Bakery.

Judy was a loving and supportive mother, passing on her love of travel, her sense of adventure and her ability to see the best in the world to her three sons. In her later years, she derived great joy in her role as "Grandma" and "Bubbe" to her three grandsons. She took every opportunity to spend time with family, traveling far and wide to do so.

Judy will be truly missed by a large community of friends. She had an amazing positivity and an ability to establish strong connections leaving the many lives she touched along the way immeasurably richer for having known her.

Judy is survived by her three sons, Sidney (Betsy), Norm, Rob (Clare) her grandsons Alexander, Nathan and Andrew, as well as her sister Marika.
