BP Canada's new looks for roof lines are tough to top

`Unprecedented patterns' offer chance for homeowners to express sense of style

- LAURA SEVERS

Monotone roofs could be a thing of the past.

In what is being described as an industry first, BP Canada said it has launched a line of shingles that can be merged together — according to pre-set options — by alternating two colours over successive rows to create a third hue that produces a complementary or contrasting visual effect.

“The result is unprecedented looks and patterns that bring a modern twist and elegance to roofs, and express people's unique sense of style,” said Nathalie Lambert, BP Canada's marketing director. “Home decor is an expression of people's personalities, and now we're giving homeowners an opportunity to affix their signature to their roofs with unique natural looks that adapt to both classic and contemporary architectural styles, and blend into a home's facade like never before.”

These shingles are part of BP's top-performing Signature line, which features multi-toned shades inspired by fine food, travel and nature. For example, BP said the colours in the Signature line are now purer than ever thanks to a richer, deeper granule composition noting that its Cumin is the industry's most intense black, while its Arabica is a pure brown, free from red or orange nuances.

BP said this is all about the next generation in roofing: a modern twist on the solid black, grey and brown colours that have topped homes for decades.

“In our increasingly complex world, consumers are opting for calming, organic decor and these choices are extending to their homes' exteriors as well,” said Lambert, in unveiling this year's roofing trends.

To produce the multi-tone effect, Lambert said that Profusio, a tool unique to BP, was created by its Chroma Colour Lab.

“It's an innovation that came to market this year and is unique to BP,” said Lambert. “Signature colours were designed to be combined together on the same roof for unlimited design possibilities. By blending various colours of Signature shingles, we created new and highly customized roofing colours that will express your unique sense of style.”

This concept, added Lambert, is for those who want to stand out from the crowd and put their own signature on their home and roof.

But for those who still prefer a more traditional roof colour, BP has other options.

“Our Manoir shingles recreate the sophisticated look of natural stone and slate roofs of yesteryear, without the weight and maintenance drawbacks,” said Lambert. “Above all, it combines beauty and performance to meet the highest expectations in appearance and durability. In creating the five dream colours at the heart of our Manoir collection, our designers were inspired by the most beautiful castles from Scotland to Bavaria. These elegant and timeless shingles are perfectly suited to all types of architecture, siding and landscaping.”

As to pricing, BP notes that as each roof is different and installation charges vary. It would only say that for Profusio colours, the price of the shingle remains the same as for the other colours in the Signature collection. However, it noted that since these colours require a specific installation method, installation costs may be higher. Manoir shingles, it added, are more expensive because of their special look and sturdier construction (approximately 15 per cent more expensive than the Signature line).

As to when you should replace your roof, BP said an annual visual inspection is a great way to assess your roof's condition and ensure that your shingles last longer.

“Spring and fall are the most recommended seasons for a roof replacement — when temperatures aren't too hot or cold — to ensure optimal adherence of the shingles without risking damage,” said Lambert. “Rain and humidity can also affect how quickly your job can be completed, so it's best to time your roof replacement accordingly. The old shingles must be removed. While it is absolutely possible to do it yourself following manufacturer's application instructions, BP has an entire network of vetted certified roofers ready to take on your roofing project.”

Building Products of Canada Corp. (BP Canada) has been producing home building and home renovation products since 1905. Its product range includes asphalt shingles, shingle underlayments, waterproofing membranes, hot and cold asphalt, wood fibre structural panels, insulating and sound-deadening panels, and decorative ceiling tiles and panels.
