team canada’s loss is the edmonton Oil Kings’ gain.

With captain trey Fixwolansky passed over in the selection camp roster announced this week for the national team competing in the World Junior championships in Vancouver and Victoria over the holidays, the Oil Kings won’t have to loan out the player who was tied for first place in Western Hockey League scoring coming into Friday’s slate.

“yeah, he’s having a pretty special year, no question,” said Oil Kings assistant coach Luke Pierce. “Probably being left off the World Junior group there, I think, gave extra motivation for him. So, selfishly for us, it’s real good.

“but obviously a very elite group and a tough one to crack with lots of players who could have been a part of it, but for him that’s been his m-o his whole life.”

undrafted in the WHL and through the first year he was eligible for the NHL draft, Fix-wolansky appears to be a steal for the columbus blue Jackets, who took him in the seventh round in June.

the 19-year-old edmontonian has 20 goals and 61 points through 31 games with the Oil Kings this year.
